Georgy-Alabam

 Georgy-Alabam Square Dance Weekend
January 18-20, 2019 at Cheaha State Park

with
Phil Jamison, Scott Russell, the Red Mountain Yellowhammers, the Hickhoppers, and Mountain Yanny

(Get  detailed information, schedule and directions here)

Come spend a cozy winter weekend of hot old timey dancing in the foothills of the Southern Appalachian mountains, near the Georgia-Alabama state line.

Georgy-Alabam 2019 presents Phil Jamison and Scott Russell calling southern squares and big sets and music by hard driving old time bands from Alabama and Georgia — Red Mountain Yellowhammers, Mick Kinney's Hick Hoppers and Mountain Yanny. To whet your appetite, take a look at these videos from the past.
Location
We’ll dance in the historic 1930s ballroom at the Bald Rock Lodge, in Cheaha State Park (the highest point in Alabama), 25 miles south of Anniston, Alabama.
Tuition and Registration
  • Register here.
  • Tuition costs $80 per person. We limit registration to the first lucky 80. We'll send you detailed information about the camp and the schedule soon after you register.
  • Your registration fee includes all workshops and dancing, ample breakfasts Saturday and Sunday mornings and after-dance snacks throughout the weekend.

Travel
Because Georgy-Alabam is held atop a mountain in January, there is the possibility that a winter storm will cause postponement or cancellation.  If you are buying airline tickets, be sure to get refundable ones or purchase travel insurance that will cover this possibility.

Lodging
You are responsible for choosing and paying for your own lodging. We have a block of rooms reserved until December 1st. After that we can no longer guarantee you a room as the park will make unreserved rooms available to the general public.

The State Park offers motel rooms, cabins, chalets, and campsites. Reserve your lodging under group number 1984 (the Georgy-Alabam square dance group). It is very important that you tell them that number or at least the name of the event; otherwise they will tell you that all rooms/cabins are reserved. You can make reservations at www.alapark.com/cheaharesort.

For folks on a tight budget: for $20 you can reserve floor space and showers in the lodge for the weekend when you send in your registration form.

This Year's Callers and Bands
Phil Jamison (Asheville, NC)

A nationally-known dance caller and scholar, old-time musician and flatfoot dancer, Phil has called dances, performed, and taught at music festivals and dance events throughout the U.S. and overseas since the early 1970s, including more than thirty-five years as a member of the Green Grass Cloggers. As Georgy-Alabam’s first featured caller he set the tone of the weekend with its focus on fun, accessible traditional dances.
Scott Russell (Atlanta)
Scott possesses a trove of great old-time dances and teaches them with great humor and clarity. As a founder of Georgy-Alabam he’s been a crucial part of all our good times.
The Red Mountain Yellowhammers (Birmingham)
Georgy-Alabam’s host band is distinctively raucous, exuberant and may be infectious! They love to dance and if they could do it and play at the same time, they’d be in a square with you.
The Hick Hoppers (Atlanta)
When you hear the Hoppers you’ll swear you’ve time-travelled to the 1920’s and are dancing to Gid Tanner, Riley Puckett and the Skillet Lickers. Mick Kinney and his boys are old-time musical treasures.
Mountain Yanny
Headed by fiddler Charlie Hunter, the Yannies are talented millennials whose old-time music is just like it’s supposed to be for high-spirited dancing.

Scholarships
Georgy-Alabam has a limited number of scholarships available. The scholarships cover registration cost ($80 per person) and communal floor space in the lodge where we dance ($20). The communal space includes a few beds (though mostly floor space) along with bathrooms and showers. The scholarships also include Sat. and Sun. breakfasts plus a Sat. night potluck.  Other meals are on your own--there is a communal kitchen.
If interested, send an email to georgyalabam@gmail.com. and tell us a little bit about your dance and music background and why you would like to come to Georgy-Alabam.  This information will be shared with the Georgy-Alabam committee.

We welcome your interest!
